HISTORY OF THE JUKEBOX
Credit: Wikipedia

Coin-operated music boxes and player pianos were the first forms of automated coin-operated musical devices. These instruments used paper rolls, metal disks, or metal cylinders to play a musical selection on the instrument, or instruments, enclosed within the device. In the 1890s these devices were joined by machines which used actual recordings instead of physical instruments. In 1890, Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph, the first of which was an Edison Class M Electric Phonograph retrofitted with a device patented under the name of Coin Actuated Attachment for Phonograph. The music was heard via one of four listening tubes.

Early designs, upon receiving a coin, unlocked the mechanism, allowing the listener to turn a crank that simultaneously wound the spring motor and placed the reproducer’s stylus in the starting groove. Frequently, exhibitors would equip many of these machines with listening tubes (acoustic headphones) and array them in “phonograph parlors”, allowing the patron to select between multiple records, each played on its own machine. Some machines even contained carousels and other mechanisms for playing multiple records. Most machines were capable of holding only one musical selection, the automation coming from the ability to play that one selection at will. In 1918 Hobart C. Niblack patented an apparatus that automatically changed records, leading to one of the first selective jukeboxes being introduced in 1927 by the Automated Musical Instrument Company, later known as AMI.

In 1928, Justus P. Seeburg, who was manufacturing player pianos, combined an electrostatic loudspeaker with a record player that was coin-operated, and gave the listener a choice of eight records. This Audiophone machine was wide and bulky, and had eight separate turntables mounted on a rotating Ferris wheel-like device, allowing patrons to select from eight different records. Later versions of the jukebox included Seeburg’s Selectophone, with 10 turntables mounted vertically on a spindle. By maneuvering the tone arm up and down, the customer could select from 10 different records.

The term jukebox came into use in the United States beginning in 1940, apparently derived from the familiar usage “juke joint“, derived from the Gullah word “juke” or “joog” meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked.[6] As it applies to the ‘use of a jukebox’, the terms juking (v.) and juker (n.) are the correct expressions.

Song-popularity counters told the owner of the machine the number of times each record was played (A and B side were generally not distinguished), with the result that popular records remained, while lesser-played songs could be replaced.

Wallboxes were an important, and profitable, part of any jukebox installation. Serving as a remote control, they enabled patrons to select tunes from their table or booth. One example is the Seeburg 3W1, introduced in 1949 as companion to the 100-selection Model M100A jukebox. Stereo sound became popular in the early 1960s, and wallboxes of the era were designed with built-in speakers to provide patrons a sample of this latest technology.

Initially playing music recorded on wax cylinders, the shellac 78 rpm record dominated jukeboxes in the early part of the 20th century. The Seeburg Corporation introduced an all 45 rpm vinyl record jukebox in 1950; since the 45s were smaller and lighter, they soon became the dominant jukebox media for the last half of the 20th century. 33⅓-R.P.M., C.D.s, and videos on DVDs were all introduced and used in the last decades of the century. MP3 downloads, and Internet-connected media players came in at the start of the 21st century. The jukebox’s history has followed the wave of technological improvements in music reproduction and distribution. With its large speaker size, facilitating low-frequency (rhythm) reproduction, and large amplifier, the jukebox played sound with higher quality and volume than the listener could in his or her home, sometimes music with a “beat”.

Jukeboxes were most popular from the 1940s through the mid-1960s, particularly during the 1950s. By the middle of the 1940s, three-quarters of the records produced in America went into jukeboxes. While often associated with early rock and roll music, their popularity extends back much earlier, including classical music, opera and the swing music era.

Styling progressed from the plain wooden boxes in the early thirties to beautiful light shows with marbelized plastic and color animation in the Wurlitzer 850 Peacock of 1941. But after the United States entered the war, metal and plastic were needed for the war effort. Jukeboxes were considered “nonessential”, and none were produced until 1946. The 1942 Wurlitzer 950 featured wooden coin chutes to save on metal. At the end of the war, in 1946, jukebox production resumed and several “new” companies joined the fray. Jukeboxes started to offer visual attractions: bubbles, waves, circles of changing color which came on when a sound was played.

Virtual Hero For Your Next Event

One of the newest forms of entertainment for special events is incorporating gamification into event activities. Amusement Masters is proud to be a pioneer of this new trend by offering gamification opportunities to clients through a suite of virtual and customizable games called Virtual Hero. The term gamification refers to an incorporation of social and reward aspects into an activity. Essentially the concept of ‘gamifying’ links the game player with a system of online social interactions and rewards through customization – personalizing the game experience all-around for the user. With Virtual Hero we use green screen imaging to capture an event attendee’s image and literally place them ‘inside’ the game that’s played on their own personal mobile device during the event. Each Virtual Hero game can be customized to the specific event’s theme or company brand of the host of the party. It’s a unique game tie in with ‘social engagement’ that most games cannot match – engaging for players of all ages!

By adding our Virtual Hero game to an event clients’ have the option of four interactive games, each with a fun virtual twist:

• Hit the Hero, is a fast-paced game that emulates the old arcade favorite Whack-A-Mole. In this modern update, the game is customized so that the player whacks their own face and attempts to not hit the rabbit. All good fun, in an effort to increase their points and make it to the event leaderboard for prizes and recognition. Want to see how this game works? Click onto Google Play!

Screen Shot 2014-10-29 at 9.46.20 AM
• Hero Jump is a game that completely engages the player into the action. Players work to jump towards the top and beat the record by climbing the hero tower. Like Hit The Hero, players maneuver to increase their points and make it to the event leaderboard for prizes and recognition. Want to see how this game works? Click onto Google Play!

• Bring casino fun to your event with Hero Slot Machine. This game makes the user feel like they’re in a Las Vegas casino…virtually! The image of the attendee’s face is added to this game and incorporated into a rolling slot machine. Guests then choose a bet and win according to their playing result. Want to see how this game works? Just click onto Google Play!

• For guests who want to show off their style then Hero Dress Up is the perfect activity! The attendee’s image is captured by green screen photography and then put onto a touch screen iPad. Attendees can then customize their virtual fashions to their liking. Once customized and completed the fashionable results are printed…making the photo a great party take away. We Played At Eventeract!

This Spring we were honored to be a major sponsor for the Eventeract conference in it’s inaugural year. Produced by the Georgia Chapter Meeting Planners Association (GaMPI), the conference was geared towards engaging the meeting and special events planner. The partnership was win-win; it gave Amusement Masters the opportunity to showcase to an audience of planners and it gave attendees two days of play that enhanced the learning experience.

On both conference days Amusement Masters maintained a booth on the expo floor. This gave us an ideal space for meeting with attendees and giving them a small taste of our game and amusement inventory. Our booth was Western inspired and featured the Wild West Quick Draw, our Western Shootout arcade game and our newest game, “Hit The Hero.” The decor was straight from the Wild West with western fencing and barrel decor items. We even brought in comfortable leather seating for guests looking to kick back and take a load-off as they made their way through the expo.

On the first evening of the conference we placed games throughout the conference’s signature fundraiser “The Gathering.” The event theme was “Back to the 80’s.” We loved this theme because it opened the door to bring in a variety of 1980’s Arcade Games and Pinball Machines, our Classic Strip Photo Booth and our new 2014 Instagram Interactive Booth. All in all, Amusement Masters helped keep the 80’s vibe alive that night.

Winter Wonderland

I am sure you know by now that Atlanta has pretty much been crippled by a winter storm.    The 6″ of snow we received probably would not have been as big of a deal if Mother Nature had not also decided to give us a nice layer of ice on top of it.     So, as I sit here trapped inside by the snow and ice, I thought, why not work on some Winter Wonderland themed events.   I know what you are thinking – forget winter, I am ready for the tropical theme.   But trust me, come August and the 90 degree temperatures, you will be longing to have an event with this awesome theme.

We start off with some simulators.   Test your skills on a the ski slopes with the Alpine Ski Racer.    Want something a little edgier?   Try snow boarding with our Alpine Surfer.   Have you ever dreamed of riding a snow mobile through the city…if so, the Arctic Thunders are perfect for you.   We even link 2 of them together so you can race head to head against someone else.      If space won’t let you have one of the simulators, try a video game console with a winter sports game.   Our 42″ high def screens will have you feeling like you are in the middle of the action!

But the true show piece of any winter themed event is definitely Playmotion.    We can work with you to customize the experience for your event so your guests can build snowmen, bounce snow flakes across the screen and play with ice scapes…all by simply letting their shadows interact with the images on the screen!   It’s the ultimate in creating a unique winter themed event for your next event or meeting.
